To Virginia

This is an old one (originally written 2006), but I'm re-posting inspired by the "Write A Letter to an Author You Admire" on She Writes.

To Virginia

I have so much more
at my disposal
than previous embattled
and for that I thank them,

I will not take to my bed
and be given the rest cure;
I will not be accused
of hysterics.

I have this privilege
because of words sweat
clean through bedclothes,
candles burnt to nubs,
and journals hidden
beneath mattresses.

There is no secret
you could tell me
that would ever
make me shrink away.

Tonight I will not
put rocks into the pockets
of my dress
and walk into the river
and I am grateful.

I am grateful.
